I was seen as a new patient in Mr Hewes' outpatient clinic at Southmead Hospital on Wednesday, 6th November 2013. I was treated with both courtesy and professionalism by Mr Hewes who took the trouble to explain clearly the proposed treatment using x-rays and investigations which had already been undertaken. He furthermore gave me approximate timescales for the proposed treatment and I left the appointment feeling very reassured about the way forward.

I had gall bladder problems and Mr Hewes advised that the level of symptoms I was experiencing was of medium severity. I made an informed choice to go ahead with a removal operation. The operation was successful but highlighted the need for a follow up operation called an ERCP to remove more stones. The risk of complications such as pancreatitis was clearly explained to me and I decided to go ahead. Unfortunately, I did get pancreatitis and received excellent care at Frenchay Hospital from a range of consultants, doctors and nurses. A further ERCP was required to finally remove all of the stones, which was successful. My GP got me back into hospital quickly when the pancreatitis occurred. With the benefit of hindsight, it would have been good to stay in hospital one night on the day of the ERCP.
